Do's and Don'ts

1 One Pet per One E-mail address.

One Pet per room. As your mail address is basically the location for your Pet's room, please don't use multiple Pets for the single address. This can cause the program to bug, resulting in the Pet leaving home or not returning to its room.

2 Connect to your ISP first.

This software has no driver to automatically connect to your ISP when sending or receiving mail. With certain operating systems, PostPet may connect automatically to the internet but in general please check and send mail after connecting to the internet. If you send mail by Pet without connecting to the Internet, the Pet will get lost.

3 Use Postman, too.

If you pass outgoing mail to the Postman, PostPet functions as a standard e-mail program. Always use the Postman to send mail to people not using the Pet program, otherwise your Pet or the mail recipient may be inconvenienced.

4 Send pet for your friends only.

Because Pets can only carry one mail item at a time, they cannot be used to send mail with a 'Cc' attached or to multiple addresses. Neither can Pets be used to send mail with attached files. Your Pet will not return home until the mail has been read. When the mail has been read (or the pet runs out of patience - between a half to one day), your Pet will come home. Check your mail if you think your Pet might have come home.

If a mail delivered via Pet is accidentally read by another e-mail program, it will be 'absorbed' into that program. Although this has little influence on your pet's health, and the Pet will be restored in its former condition after approximately half a day, it is not a pleasant experience for the Pet! Only use the pet to send mail to other PostPet Users.

5 Pet sometimes sends its own mail

Your Pet will sometimes send its own mail messages to you or to people listed in the List of Friends. Your Pet may also send its data or mail address to a specific address in PostPetPark when any of the following occur: the Pet expires; the Pet runs away from home; something serious happens to the Pet. (However, user's private information such as the contents of mail or passwords are never divulged by the Pet.)

Q Something went past the window.
A This is what we call an extra guest. Visiting Pets sometimes bring other pets along too. They disappear when you check your mail.

Q What is the Secret Diary?
A Your Pet will write an entry in this diary when it visits another Pet's room, on an errand. The entry records anything that happened there. It also means that your mail was successfully delivered.

Q There's a black silhouette around my Pet.
A This is either dirt or a swarm of flies. Pets become grubbier and grubbier when they go on errands. If it bothers you, just wash your pet.

Q Can I change the Pet`s name or the owner name?
A Unfortunately, these names cannot be changed once the program has begun.

Q Can I send the Pet out on an errand without connecting to the Internet?
A Your Pet will get lost. However, it will find its way home after about a day. This experience is not very pleasant for your Pet, so always connect to the Internet before sending any mail.

Q My Pet hasn't come home.
A Pets do not come home until the mail that they have delivered is checked, but the Pet will eventually give up - after several hours to several days - if the mail is not checked.

If the mail has been properly delivered -
The problem may be that the recipient has checked the mail using a different software package. When this happens, your Pet will not recover for roughly half a day.

Q My mail is corrupted.
A Mail may become corrupted on servers set to 8 bit letter codes (such as those used by certain university bodies or companies). Most providers use 7 bit letter codes. Another cause of corrupt mail is that the settings of the person who sent the mail are incorrect. The majority of mail programs use a 7 bit JIS format. Check with the sender that this is correctly selected.

Q My Pet's asleep and I can't send any mail.
A Your Pet will go to bed when it runs out of stamina. You cannot send any mail via the pet when this happens. Please use the Postman to send the mail. If you leave the PostPet program open while the pet is in bed, your Pet will eventually wake up. It is not necessary to be connected to the Internet during this period.

Q Do Pets have a life expectancy?
A The life expectancy of your Pet is determined by the amount of mail it has delivered. Your Pet is like a living stamp, and will expire after delivering a set amount of mail. Fortunately, your Pet's life expectancy can be lengthened by the way you look after it. Your Pet's happiness increases when it delivers your mail adeptly and manages to pass it by hand to the recipient. When your Pet's happiness increases, so does the number of mail items the Pet is able to deliver. Which effectively means that your Pet's life expectancy lengthens. This number varies for each pet and per pet type. If your Pet's happiness level does decrease, however, it may leave home or die prematurely. A Pet determined to leave home, will not return, and may write some mail to you confirming this.
